Skin Crawl

2019

performance + installation

As a material, glue is used to connect and bind a point of contact. Here, glue is instead used to document a fleeting touch. Removed from its traditional context, the glue – and thereby moment of contact – becomes a sculptural element in itself. Applied and then removed from the body, it retains a detailed impression of skin which, combined with its translucent quality, transforms the glue into a second skin.

The body, painted with glue, crawls within a circle of light. A number of impressions are made through this action – the body leaves an impression on the floor, the floor on the body, and both the body and the floor onto the glue. Beyond material transferences, Skin Crawl considers the moment and quality of contact as primary influencer of impression. The light which frames this contact is synonymous with the ‘gaze’ - setting the perimeters of emotional and bodily reaction, its impression shapes the action. The action in turn shapes the impressions created between body and floor.
